Abstract
This study explores the use of Smile and Learn English YouTube videos to determine whether there is an improvement in vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at one junior high school in Bandung. The study's primary objective is to examine whether students improve their vocabulary mastery after being taught using Smile and Learn English YouTube videos. Specifically, it addresses three main points: (1) students’ vocabulary mastery before using smile and learn English youtube videos, (2) students’ vocabulary mastery after using smile and learn English youtube video, and (3) the significance of the difference before and after using smile and learn English youtube videos to improve vocabulary mastery. This study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design utilizing a quantitative methodology. Thirty-five students from class 7E in the 2024/2025 academic year were selected by convenience sampling. The data were collected through 25 multiple-choice vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment. The study results indicate that students’ vocabulary mastery improved after using Smile and Learn English YouTube videos. The mean score increased from 47.89 on the pre-test to 74.97 on the post-test. The lowest score increased from 24 to 60, and the highest from 80 to 100. Furthermore, the statistical analysis using the paired sample t-test showed that the t-count value 23.109 exceeded the t-table value 2.032, indicating a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Thus, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted. The N-Gain score was 0.5498, which is categorized as a medium level of improvement. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after using Smile and Learn English YouTube videos. This suggests that the integration of educational YouTube videos can support vocabulary development in English language learning at the junior high school level.
