Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze the types and strategies of thanking expressions used by Instagram users in the comment column of Motaz Azaiza’s posts, a Palestinian journalist known for actively speaking out on humanitarian issues. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through documentation techniques of comments on two posts, a video of Motaz Azaiza’s solidarity speech in London and a photo of a reunion with a child airstrike victim on Motaz Azaiza's Instagram account. All data were analyzed using Cheng’s theory (2010) which classified thanking expressions into six types (thanking, appreciation, non-gratitude, combinations, thanking third person, formal speech) and Cheng (2005) to analyzed the used strategies (thanking, appreciation, positive feelings, apology, alerters). The research revealed that the most dominant type of expression was thanking, followed by combinations. The most frequently used expression strategy was explicit thanking, both in simple and elaborate forms. The findings also indicated that Instagram users tend to elaborate their thanks with specific reasons, intensified emotions, and expressed personal appreciation that strengthens the social and emotional dimensions of comments. The thanking expression patterns demonstrated the function of thanking not only as a linguistic formality but also as a means of building and strengthening emotional bonds, social solidarity, and moral support in the public digital realm. The thanking expression in Motaz Azaiza’s Instagram comments served as an effective communication medium for building interpersonal relationships, strengthening community solidarity, and as a symbol of appreciation for humanitarian struggles. The results of this study could be used as a reference for pragmatics learning, especially in the material of expressive speech and digital communication strategies. Thus, this research confirmed the relevance of pragmatic analysis in understanding the dynamics of contemporary social interactions in digital media.
