Abstract

This study examines how The Father (2020) uses narrative techniques to simulate the subjective experience of dementia by analysing three questions: how Order is constructed, how Focalization is constructed, and how their interaction portrays dementia. The study employs Gérard Genette’s narratology of Order (analepsis and prolepsis) and Focalization (internal perspective) and Brian Richardson’s models of unnatural narratives (denarration, antimimetic order and differential temporality) when classical categories prove insufficient. The writer used descriptive qualitative method for this study. This thesis aims to show that the interaction between Order and Focalization in The Father (2020) allows audiences to experience main character’s dementia. The findings show that 20 of 28 scenes (71%) feature analepsis and 14 (50%) feature prolepsis, while 10 scenes (36%) require Richardson’s supplements: denarration in 7 scenes, antimimetic order in 6 scenes, and differential temporality in 6 scenes. While in focalization, fixed internal focalization accounts for 26 of 29 scenes (90 percent), with variable and multiple internal focalization comprising the remainder. A synthesis of scene-by-scene interactions resulted in 20 distinct patterns demonstrating how fragmented chronology combined with a locked-in perspective produces effects of disorientation, paranoia, sensory regression, recursive anxiety, and suspended memory. This study shows that the interaction between order and focalization are crucial in capturing simulation of dementia, this study also shows the limit on genettean analepsis and prolepsis in capturing radical temporal disorder.
