Abstract
This research did not overlook the significance of analyzing the characterization and conflicts of the main character in Jojo Rabbit (2019) by Taika Waititi, as both aspects could not be separated from the overall progression of the story. In literature, characterization could not be ignored because without it, the story would not develop in a meaningful way. The purposes of this study were not unrelated to three main objectives: (1) to find the characterization that could be identified from the main character of the film Jojo Rabbit (2019), (2) to understand the conflict that affected the main character of the film Jojo Rabbit (2019). This research was based on Petrie & Boggs’ theory, which was employed to define characterization, conflict, and character development. A qualitative descriptive method and content analysis were applied, ensuring that the research did not neglect a deep exploration of the problems in order to find the answers. The results did not show an absence of characterization, but rather the identification of numerous scenes that revealed character traits through various techniques such as appearance, dialogue, reactions of other characters, external and internal actions, leitmotifs, and names. The result of this research was the finding of 39 scenes in the characterization, namely 4 scenes of characterization through appearance, 4 scenes through dialogue, 20 scenes through external action, 2 scenes through internal action, 3 scenes through other characters’ reactions, 4 scenes through contrast, 1 scene through leitmotif, and 1 scene through the name. Then, 16 conflict scenes explained how the conflict happened to the main character, namely 4 scenes of internal conflict between Jojo and himself. There were external conflicts, namely 4 scenes of Jojo and Rosie’s conflict, 5 scenes with Elsa, 1 scene with Captain Klenzendorf, and 2 scenes with society. In conclusion, this research did not reject the premise that conflict served as a critical catalyst for character development. A character’s progression in Jojo Rabbit could not be detached from the struggles faced, since development would not emerge without the pressure, challenge, and transformation brought by conflict.
