Abstract

This Research aims to describe the dynamics of power and knowledge as well as the construction of individual subjectivity based on the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Employing a qualitative approach with textual analysis as its method, this research specifically examines eight alternative life decisions made by the main character, Nora Seed, throughout her journey across multiple realities. The analysis focuses on how these decisions are not merely driven by personal desire, but are also shaped by systems of knowledge and power relations that have been internalized within social structures. Michel Foucault’s theory of power and knowledge is utilized to explain how Nora, as a subject, is constructed, disciplined, and ultimately capable of resisting dominant truth narratives. The findings reveal that Nora’s pursuit of an ideal life exposes the mechanisms of power embedded in each alternative existence, all of which reinforce societal demands. Her decision to return to her root life is not a form of surrender, but an affirmative act to reclaim agency and construct the meaning of life based on subjective truth. Thus, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how subjectivity is formed within a network of power and knowledge.
