Abstract
Pragmatics is the study of the ability of language users to pair sentences with the appropriate context. The discussion of meaning in pragmatics is closely related to speech acts. Expressive speech acts are speech acts that involve feelings and attitudes, such as apologising, thanking, congratulating, praising, expressing condolences, criticising, and satirising. In this study, the researcher analyses the data to find the types of expressive speech acts and how the speakers feel when expressing expressive speech acts in the movie ‘Barbie: Princess Charm School’ to answer the researcher's research questions, namely 1.) What are the types of expressive speech acts found in Barbie: Princess Charm School movie? 2.) How does the speaker feel when expressing expressive speech acts in the movie Barbie: Princess Charm School?. The researcher uses Searle's (1969) Speech Acts theory to analyse the data in the form of dialogue in the movie, by using descriptive qualitative research method. From the analysis can be found that the expressive speech acts in the movie Barbie: Princess Charm School are in 39 type of expressive speech act data namely 9 data of praising, 11 data of thanking, 4 data of congratulating, and 15 data of apologizing. And the feelings of the speaker when saying speech acts include feeling happy and amazed when saying congratulating, praising, and thanking. However, they feel guilty when saying apologizing.
