Abstract

This study examined the adventure formula employed through the film elements, as well as the mechanisms by which these elements shape the narrative of character development in The Revenant by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The film presents narrative indications of a mentorship phase for the main character, conveyed subtly through flashback sequences that reveal Glass’s mastery of survival skills, along with a redefined form of reward distinct from that of traditional adventure stories. This research applies to a descriptive qualitative method by closely observing the cinematic phenomena, incorporating the concepts of film elements, character dimensions, and the adventure formula in the interpretive stage. The findings of this study reveal that The Revenant (2015) adopts Campbell’s classical Hero’s Journey structure but subverted it to emphasize the struggle for survival rather than heroism. The film reshapes the adventure narrative by presenting an unromantic, raw, and brutal portrayal of endurance, betrayal, and the unforgiving force of nature. Through powerful visual language and an intense close-up focus on the character, the film illustrates how physical suffering mirrors inner transformation. Ultimately, Hugh Glass’s journey is not about victory, but about the emotional and moral burden of survival, showing that true resilience lies in the ability to preserve one’s humanity amidst pain.
