Abstract

The foreign language public speech is a complex communication challenge for political figures, because it requires linguistic mastery as well as emotional stability. In formal situations such as state speeches, the pressure to appear perfect often triggers nervousness and cognitive disorders that affect speech fluency. The ability to convey a message accurately and confidently in a foreign language is often a measure of a leader's quality in front of the public. However, psychological conditions such as anxiety or lack of self-confidence can hinder the process of conveying the message. This study examines cases of nervousness, dead air, and mispronunciation in a speech by a female national figure who delivered a speech in English. The phenomenon is analyzed using Cognitive Dissonance Theory (Festinger, 1957), Language Processing Theory (Levelt, 1989), and Emotional Interference theory (Eysenck, 2000). These three theories help explain how mental stress and internal conflict can interfere with the process of language production, from conceptualization to articulation. When there is a mismatch between public expectations and the reality of communication performance, individuals can experience cognitive dissonance that worsens the quality of speech. The results of the analysis show that communication barriers are not only caused by lack of language proficiency, but also by psychological stress and cognitive disorders due to anxiety. This study contributes to the study of psycholinguistics, especially in understanding the dynamics of public communication in high-pressure situations and the importance of mental preparation in political communication performance.
