Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotation and connotation of emojis used in comments on viral TikTok videos. The object of this study is the emojis found in comments on viral TikTok videos on the @BTS_OFFICIAL_BIGHIT account. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis through an interpretative approach in interpreting the denotation and connotation of emojis in comments on viral TikTok videos. There are 20 viral TikTok videos used in analyzing these denotations and connotations. The theory used in this study is the denotative and connotative theory proposed by Roland Barthes (1972). The results of the analysis show that emojis play a denotative role as a direct representation of emotional expressions such as sadness , admiration, love, and other emotional expressions. Meanwhile, connotatively, emojis play an implicit role as a representation of emotional expressions such as hope and prayer, admiration and enthusiasm, longing, and other emotional expressions. It can be concluded that in this study, the application of denotation and connotation of emojis in comments on the TikTok video on the @BTS_OFFICIAL_BIGHIT account is able to produce meanings related to the context of the video and the feelings of the comment writer, so that emojis not only serve as a complement to the text, but also play an important role as an element of a sign system that reinforces the direction of emotions, clarifies the intensity of responses, and reduces ambiguity of meaning in text-based communication in digital communication.
