Abstract
This research aims to reveal form of patriarchal control and women’s resistance against the patriarchal control in three short stories by Ernest Hemingway’s: “Hills Like White Elephants,” “Cat in the Rain,” and “The End of Something.” In literary work, women are often depicted through patriarchal stereotype, and literature serves as a space to depict women’s autonomy. By using qualitative methods and a feminist literary criticism approach, this research shows that patriarchal control in these three short stories is not always explicitly visible but rather subtly present in everyday power dynamics. This is also apparent in the resistance shown by the women’s characters, who do not show overt rebellion but instead resist through everyday activities that, although seemingly normal, are filled with symbols of resistance against the control of their bodily autonomy. Therefore, future research is expected to expand the analysis of hidden forms of patriarchal control in order to raise awareness of domestication practices that are not consciously recognized.
