Abstract
This study investigated the correlation between listening habits to English songs on Spotify and the vocabulary mastery of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 25 Bandung. This study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 35 students selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected using a questionnaire to measure students’ listening habits to English songs on Spotify and a vocabulary mastery test covering word meaning, synonyms, antonyms, contextual meaning, and collocation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and linearity tests, and Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation. The descriptive results showed that students’ listening habits to English songs on Spotify were at a moderate level, with a mean score of 67.46. Meanwhile, students’ vocabulary mastery had a mean score of 16.97 and was generally categorized as high, with 60.0% of students falling into the high category. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between listening habits to English songs on Spotify and vocabulary mastery (r = 0.422, p = 0.012). Since the p-value was less than 0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.178) indicated that approximately 17.8% of the variance in students’ vocabulary mastery could be statistically explained by their listening habits to English songs on Spotify, while the remaining 82.2% was attributable to other factors not examined in this study. These findings indicate that listening habits to English songs on Spotify are significantly and positively associated with students’ vocabulary mastery. However, the moderate correlation and the coefficient of determination suggest that listening habits are only one of several factors related to vocabulary mastery. Therefore, English songs on Spotify can serve as a supplementary source of authentic English exposure, particularly when students actively engage with lyrics, unfamiliar vocabulary, and contextual meanings.
