Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited scholarship examining how female emotional conflict is constructed through the enemies-to-lovers trope in contemporary romance films. Previous studies have primarily focused on moral values, linguistic features, or romance formulas, leaving the narrative construction of female emotional conflict largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how the enemies-to-lovers trope represents female emotional conflict in Anyone But You (2023), directed by Will Gluck. The study employs Janice A. Radway's romance theory, supported by the concepts of romance genre, the enemies-to-lovers trope, and characterization. This research adopts an interpretive paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consist of dialogues, actions, expressions, and scenes portraying Bea's emotional conflict, collected through textual observation of the film and screenplay and analyzed using narrative analysis. The findings reveal that Bea's emotional conflict develops through several narrative stages, including misunderstanding, emotional resistance, self-protection, gradual emotional openness, emotional recognition, and reconciliation. The study demonstrates that the enemies-to-lovers trope functions not merely as a romantic formula but as a narrative mechanism that structures the heroine's emotional journey. Furthermore, emotional conflict becomes the central process through which the heroine's emotional needs are recognized, trust is established, and intimacy is ultimately achieved.
