Abstract

This study examines how conversational implicatures are generated through maxim non-observance in the crisis dialogues of Zenless Zone Zero Season 2, Chapter 2, and what crisis response strategies those implicatures reflect. It aims to analyze these implicatures and the crisis response strategies they represent, following Coombs (2015). The study employs a descriptive qualitative content-analysis design, drawing on Grice's (1975) Cooperative Principle, Levinson's (1983) implicature theory, Thomas' (1995) maxim non-observance theory, and Coombs' (2015) crisis response strategies. Data comprise 33 non-player-character utterances within crisis scenes, excluding player-controlled dialogue. Particularized implicature (20 data) predominates over generalized implicature (13), as expected in crisis discourse. Flouting is the dominant form of non-observance (27 data), while violation and opting out each occur in 3 data, exclusively within particularized implicature. Quantity and quality are the most frequently non-observed maxims (13 each). All four crisis response postures are present: bolstering (10), denial (9), diminishment (8), and rebuilding (6). The study concludes that conversational implicature and crisis response strategy are linguistically integrated rather than separate phenomena, and that crisis-driven fictional dialogue produces a fuller range of maxim non-observance than general narrative dialogue documented in prior HoYoverse research.
