Abstract

An Analysis of Men’s and Women’s Language Features and Communication Style Dimensions in the Podcast “Andrew Tate And Chian Do Not Get Along | Grilling S2 Ep 7, English Literature Department, Adab and Humanity Faculties, State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Advisor 1: Dian Nurrachman, SS., M.Pd., Advisor 2: Erfan Muhamad Fauzi, M.Pd. Language plays an important role in reflecting gender identity and communication style. This study aims to analyze the language features used by male and female speakers and to identify the communication style dimensions employed in the podcast Andrew Tate And Chian Do Not Get Along | Grilling S2 Ep 7 published on the Stand Out TV YouTube channel. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of utterances produced by Andrew Tate and Chian, which were collected through documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The analysis of language features was based on Mulac, Bradac, and Gibbons’ (2001) Gender-Linked Language Effect (GLLE), while the communication style dimensions were analyzed using Mulac’s (2001) four-dimensional communication style model, including direct versus indirect, succinct versus elaborate, personal versus contextual, and instrumental versus affective. Overall, the findings indicate that both speakers demonstrated distinct communication styles associated with gender-linked language patterns. Andrew Tate predominantly employed a direct, succinct, personal, and instrumental communication style, while Chian predominantly employed an indirect, elaborate, personal, and affective communication style. However, these patterns were not exclusively determined by gender, as individual communicative intentions and the debate context also influenced their linguistic choices. Therefore, the study concludes that gender-linked language features and communication style dimensions can be observed in the speakers' utterances, while contextual and individual factors also contribute to their language use.
