Abstract

ENGLISH: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach using the Eliciting Activities (MEAs) Model in improving the mathematical literacy and sustainability awareness of junior high school students in the topic of measures of central tendency. The method used was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group design, involving 36 eighth-grade students at SMP Karya Pembangunan 10 Kota Bandung, divided into an experimental group (STEM-MEAs) and a control group (conventional), each consisting of 18 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an essay-based mathematical literacy test and a Likert-scale sustainability awareness questionnaire, then analyzed using hypothesis testing. The results showed that the average posttest scores and the N-Gain in mathematical literacy among students in the experimental class were significantly higher than those in the control class. The increase in sustainability consciousness in the experimental class was also significantly greater than that in the control class, with a higher average N-Gain, although both groups remained in the low category. Therefore, the STEM approach incorporating MEAs is effective in improving mathematical literacy while fostering students’ sustainability consciousness.
