Abstract
This research focuses on the analysis of Deixis in Soekarno’s speech of Asian African Conference 1955. The study of this analysis uses two theories of Deixis from George Yule (1996) and Stephen Levinson (1983). Therefore, there are three research questions regarding this analysis. The first question is to understand the topics and contexts of the speech. The second question is to identify Deixis and its reference from the speech, and the last one is to know the relevances between the reference of Deixis and Soekarno’s speech. The research also was done by using qualitative research method because the data analyzed is the text of the speech. Moreover, it is the structure of the text itself and the sentence which are observed. The analysis process involves the interpretation of reference and meaning of them in case of Deixis. In additional, the research was delivered by using descriptive method, since the topics and contexts in the speech were based on fact and including form of words and phrases. In the final analysis, the writer found that there are 72 data findings in this speech in which 72 data were taken from 72 paragraphs in the speech, since there are Deixis in every single utterance of the speech’s paragraph. In further, there are 1184 Deixis in total that consist of 386 Personal Deixis, 149 Spatial Deixis, 497 Temporal Deixis, 138 Discourse Deixis, and 6 Social Deixis. Accordingly, the writer explained every single reference of the deixis findings. The references are varied, whether it is directly to the discourse written or indirectly. After that, the references are related to the topics and context of the speech, in order to find the relevance between them. From this issues, there are several conclusions, which are Deixis are surely important in every language use since there must be them in every sentence or even the words themselves. Furthermore, the writer found the fact that without the understanding upon Deixis study, people would not be able to understand the topics and context given in the speech, and the explanation in the speech would not be well-delivered.
