Abstract

Antonymy is basically one of the most significant studies in Semantics, precisely Lexical Relation. It talks about the oppositeness of meaning between two words, which eventually makes it a pair. The consideration upon this study is necessary since people did not aware of the actual opposite word of another word when practicing the conversation or the speech, despite the fact that this study is commonly familiar among people. Therefore, this research focuses on analysis of Antonymy types in a literary work called “Orange Marmalade” webtoon as one real implementation of Antonymy study. There are two questions of problem’s statement formulated in this research. Firstly, what types of Antonymy found in “Orange Marmalade” webtoon and secondly, how the pairs of Antonymy can be contrasted based on the story of “Orange Marmalade”. Thereafter, the analysis of the research was studied by using the theory of Frank Palmer (1981) that stated there are three types of Antonymy in language use, which are Gradable Antonymy, Complementary Antonymy, and Relational Opposites. Subsequently, this research was conducted by using qualitative method since the data in the research are in form of words from conversation and speeches occured in the webtoon. Consequently, the research was presented by applying descriptive method as well because this research was done based on fact to achieve the research objective to get the data in the form of words and phrases. In the final findings and analysis, this research produces the result that there are 59 Antonym pairs in total in “Orange Marmalade” webtoon, that consist of 21 Gradable Antonymy, 27 Complementary Antonymy, and 11 Relational Opposite. From these findings as well, there are meanings of the pair which are relatively and absolutely interpeted, and also the meanings in which the pair gives mutual affection. Based on the whole analysis done, the researcher concluded that the use of Antonym in language use is surely important. It was constituted by the understanding that by the mastery upon this study, people would be able to recognize the proper opposite word of another word. Later on, people could enchance their vocabulary in terms of Antonyms.
