Abstract
This study analyzes the sarcasm found in the novel The Catcher in the Rye. to prove the sarcasm that appear in the novel is a form of humor. Roland Barthes's structuralist approach is used to analyze and prove that the sarcastic text in the novel The Catcher in the Rye. Through the signs contained in the sarcasm, researchers find further meaning hidden inside it and contain the structure of humor. Previously, to find analytical data in the form of suspected sarcasm texts, researchers used the book Talk is cheap by John Heiman which explains the shape of sarcasm. The Catcher in the Rye had become a controversial novel because there are many sarcastic sentences in it, before finally becoming a novel that much in demand among teenager. The Catcher in the Rye novel tells of a teenager named Holden Caulfield who was expelled from his school and decides to go long before his parents know it. The point of view in this story is the point of view of the first person. On his way Holden Caulfield continued to issue sarcastic sentences to describe his circumstances. The researchers found a humorous structure contained in the sarcasm. Although the structure of humor is dominated by superiority humor. The author of the novel can present different forms of sarcasm and humor in generally.
