Abstract

This research mainly explores the comparison of word and pronounciation from Middle and Modern Englishperiods. This research paper discusses three major concern: the first is the word changes, the second is the pronounciation changes, and the third is similarities and differences of words in both periods. The researcher uses morphological and phonological analysis to compare each words and pronunciation as in van Gelderen (2014) and Baugh and Cable (2002). A qualitative approach by Dörnyei (2007) is applied in this research. This method allows the researcher to make a systematic and factual description of the obtained data. The researcher uses the documentation study as the technique collecting data. The sources of data taken from John Gower’s Confessio Amantis and Pearl Poet Pearl which is written in two periods. The Middle English words are collected from G. C. Maulany (1970) and Bill Stanton (1995), meanwhile the Modern English words are collected from Dr. Reinhold Pauli (1963) and Bill Stanton (1995). The results of data analysis show that in Modern English, pronouns have a similar form, change only occurs in the type of second person. Adjective have lost a final –e in modern english. Adverb changes only in a few words, for example often and down. Changes to the verb word are marked by a number of things which include the loss of the suffix –e and –eth, then there are some words that experience a change of vowel when in the modern English era. Then in noun the disappearance of the ending –e,in Modern English nouns have –s and –es endings. In terms of pronunciation, several changes are described in several categories,(1) similar word form and pronunciation, (2) different word form and pronunciation, (3) similar word form but different pronunciation, (4) different word form but similar pronunciation. Meanwhile, when comparing between similarities and differences, the difference between middle and modern English in terms of morphology and phonology are more dominant.
