Abstract
Formula is one of the literary criticism in context of structuralism especially for popular literature. Formula refers to special characteristics relating to the structure of literary works. In other definition, formula is interpreted as structure or element that constructs a genre, which then distinguishes between one genre and the other, considering there are a number of genres in popular literature. Classic detective is one of genres in popular literature. Thus, this research aims to find out the classical detective formula in one of detective genre works which is Agatha Christie’s They Do It With Mirrors (1952). There are two research questions in this research and its findings are presented in the fourth chapter. The first point is based on the research question the classical detective formula in Agatha Christie's They Do It With Mirrors. The second point is the detection method used in Agatha Christie's They Do It With Mirrors. To get the results, this research uses qualitative descriptive method and the theory of classical detective formula by using John G Cawelti’s theory based on his book entitled Mystery, Adventure And Romance (1976). Detection theory uses Kayalvizhi’s theory based on his journal entitled Cerebral Analysis of Sherlock Holmes in Detection (2012), and also other theories that support the research questions of this research. The results of the analysis from this research show that classical detective formula that consists situation, pattern of action, characters & relationship, and setting arrange Agatha Christie’s They Do It With Mirrors as popular literature. Then, it also show how the detection that the stages consists observation, inference, logical reasoning and imaginative emphaty arrange the formula of detective story.
