Abstract

Reciprocal Teaching Method (RTM) is a process involving four distinct activities (predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing). Reading as one of the basic skills in English language learning. It requires students as well as teacher to have such method to deal with. Understanding the content, and finding main idea are common issues that usually block students to create a meaningful reading. Reciprocal teaching has been reported to have a great effect on students’ language skill, particularly reading. This study is aimed to determine: (1)How is students achievement in reading comprehension before being taught by using Reciprocal Teaching Method (RTM) in getting main idea? (2)How is students achievement in reading comprehension after being taught by using Reciprocal Teaching Method (RTM) in getting main idea? (3)How significant differences in students achievement in reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Teaching Method(RTM) in getting main idea? This research is a quantitative study with a pre-experimental design. There were 30 participants involving in this study, they were the students of 8th grade in SMPN 1 Sukamantri. To collect the data, the written multiple choice test was administered. The result of this study shows that there is an improvement to students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea in the students’ pre-test and post-test. It is proved by the increasing of mean students’ pre-test and post-test. The mean students’ pre-test score is 48 and the post-test is 68.50. Based on the calculation, the t-table value is significance 5% with df=29 is 2.042, while the tcount value was 8.177. It means that tcount 8.177 > ttable 2042. It can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea before and after being taught by using RTM. In conclusion, RTM affords to improve students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea. Therefore, it is suggested that it is important for teacher who wants to apply RTM to be a key or a good method for the students.
