Abstract

Song as language of human expression is created from creative and meaningful processes. Understanding the meaning in a song is very important and interesting, like the song lyrics of the album “4” created by Beyonce that have interesting messages and meaning to be examined. The researcher focused on the connotation meaning contained in the 4 song lyrics by Beyonce Giselle Knowles by using the Hook (1898) and Leech (1985) theory. There are two questions that can be discussed in this study: 1).What kinds of connotative meanings are found in Beyonce Giselle Knowles album "4" song lyrics? 2). What are the meanings of connotative words and phrase in Beyonce Giselle Knowles album "4" song lyrics? This research used the data qualitative descriptive method where the writer will analyze and interpret. In this study, the writer found fifty-five (55) connotative meanings, in which thirty-eight (38) are positive connotations and seventeen (17) are negative connotations. It also contains forty-two (42) words and thirteen (13) phrases. The context of meaning found in the album "4" includes a journey of life, sadness, sexuality, sacrifice of love, school life. After researching, the researcher found some of the same connotations in the song lyrics on this album. The conclusion is that the connotative meaning contained in the song lyrics of the album "4" is dominated by positive connotations.The researcher suggests the next researcher who is interested in taking semantics to use a sub-section of the other semantics which is not only about meaning, but about different types of meaning.
