Abstract

This study focuses on finding out the translation of noun phrase and the translation methods which are used by the translator in translating the How to Train Your Dragon movie. The data were taken from How To Train Your Dragon movie. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of noun phrase from Djuharie (2008) and the theory of translation methods from Newmark (1988). To analysis the data, the researcher used qualitative content analysis method. This research applied content analysis method to explain the translation of noun phrase and the translation methods of noun phrase. The data used in this research are taken from How To train Your Dragon movie. The result shows that there are five categories of noun phrases which are found in How To Train Your Dragon movie, consist of determiner article, determiner demonstrative, determiner possessive, determiner quantitative and adjective. The result shows that there are 94 data of determiner article, 10 data of determiner demonstrative, 52 data of determiner possessive, 43 data of determiner quantitative and 40 data of adjective. Among five categories of noun phrases in the results above, determiner article is the most dominant. The result shows that there are seven translation methods of noun phrase which are used in How To Train Your Dragon movie, consist of literal translation, word-for-word translation, faithful translation, communicative translation, free translation, semantic translation and idiomatic translation. The result shows that those are 113 phrases for literal translation, 47 phrases for word-for-word translation, 21 phrases for faithful translation, 22 phrases for communicative translation, 12 phrases for free translation, 7 phrases for semantic translation, 1 phrase for idiomatic translation. Among seven categories of translation methods in the results above, literal translation is the most dominant.
