Abstract

Movie is one of the media that has the elements to analyze the statement of problem like dialogue, character, and setting so that the statement of problem can be researched more electively. The researcher uses movie as the object of research, which is one of the media that is easy to study the politeness speech acts. The movie taken is Toy Story 4. Politeness plays an important role in communication. Everyone has a face as a picture of social life that they want to be respected. The main problem in this research is regarding the types of politeness strategies and what factors might influence the choice of these strategies. The main theory of this research is Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies. This research used the descriptive qualitative method, and the data is taken from the expression that uses by the characters in the dialogue of the movie. The researcher uses five steps in analyzing the data; presenting all the chosen data, analyzing each sentence the politeness function, choosing the types of politeness strategies, classifying the utterance based on their function, and concluding the data. The analyzed data can be conluded into 71 data; 6 Off-Record politeness, 19 Negative politeness, 35 Positive politeness, and 11 Bald On-Record politeness. The researcher found that the Positive politeness strategy dominate other strategies. The dominant factors that influence the Positive politeness is social distance. The characters in Toy Story 4 communicate with others using politeness strategies based on conditions and situations.
