Abstract
This study was intended to discover students’ reading skill and understanding of culture values in the implementation of using literary works. Specifically, this study was aimed to achieve the objectives: (1) to know the process of implementing local culture values in reading literarry works project in SMK Husnul Khotimah Tasikmalaya (2) to know reading skills and local culture values understanding of EFL Students in SMK Husnul Khotimah Tasikmalaya. This study used a qualitative research design, specifically a case study. This study is qualitative research, employing all the 12th-grade students of Class B at SMK Husnul Khotimah as participants. To obtain the data, observation, and test were used. The observation was conducted in the English class, where local culture values were implemented in reading literary works. In the test, students were given a text and fitfteen essay questions regarding the text. The process of implementing to improve EFL in the class with learning local culture through reading literary work is coded in two cycles adapted from Burn (2010) and teaching and learning cycle (TLC) by Derewianka (2016). Reading and local culture materials adapted from (Kurniawati, 2018). Then, for the test documents were taken from the students’reading result. EFL reading skill and implementing local culture values understanding in the class is coded into eight stages of test follows the reading guidance question to answer EFL reading skill and local culture values understanding passages correctly by Barret (1968). The findings showed that the process of implementation local culture values understanding and reading skills by using literary work, the students’ is (1) understood with local culture values such as knowledge, moral values, attitude, etc. (2) understood with reading comprehension such as students can identifying stated information, students can identifying relevant textual evidence. In conclusion, the implementation of local culture values in reading literary work, helps the students improve their reading skills and their understanding of local culture values. Then, this research was recommended to implement for those who want to increase reading comprehension skill, and culture values understanding.
