Abstract

Language attitude is a field that refers to various attitudinal objects, including languages, dialects, speech style, speakers, communities, language learning, language use, etc. It consists of three components: cognitive, affective, and behavioural. The cognitive component is related to someone's opinions, judgment, and beliefs. The affective component is connected to someone's emotions and feelings. The behavioural component is linked to someone's actions, habits, and decisions to do something. The research is carried out on answering these questions: 1. What components of language attitude that reveal in the characters' utterances in The King's Speech movie? 2. In what situation do the characters express the language attitude components in The King's Speech movie? This research is focused on the theory of Sociolinguistics on language attitude components established by Garret et al in the book entitled Investigating Language Attitude (2003). The research used the qualitative method. The data used are the two characters' utterances in The King's Speech movie; Prince George (the future King George VI) and Lionel Logue. The two characters' utterances (Prince George that soon to be King George VI, and Lionel Logue) were categorized into the three components of attitude. The findings show Prince George's (King George VI) utterances contain the more affective component of language attitude component, cognitive attitude (18 data), affective attitude (32 data), behavioural attitude (11 data). Prince George's utterances include emotions and feelings, like happiness, sadness, disappointment, anger, etc. The result from Lionel Logue's utterances shows there is a more cognitive component of language attitude; the detail is cognitive attitude (19 data), affective attitude (5 data), and behavioural (11 data). The utterances by Lionel include thoughts, opinion, judgment, etc. The research results can be inferred from the data analysis findings that many utterances comprise the affective aspect of language's attitude in this movie in Prince George's utterances. In Lionel's utterances, there is a more cognitive component. This is influenced by each character that displays emotions. The characters get intimate and still insists that their feelings were right and should be let out. However, that helps them understand each other.
