Abstract

This thesis analyzes the presupposition contained in Joe Russo's interview in the Talks at Google talk show. This analysis aims to find out the presupposition generated by Joe Russo's utterances and to find out the types of presupposition used by Joe Russo on the Talks at Google youtube channel. The analysis was conducted by using Cummings’s theory (2009) to find context, Griffiths’s theory (2006) to find meaning, and Yule's theory (1996) which divides the types of presuppositions into 6 types, namely, existential presupposition, factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition, non-factive presupposition, dan counterfactual presupposition. The data obtained as the object for analysis are Joe Russo’s utterances. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive analysis method. The researcher finds and then describes the data of the findings based on the interpretation of the utterances. The results are as follows; First, Joe Russo's presuppositions have generated context and meaning. The context found in presupposition has 4 factors, namely; physical context, epistemic context, linguistics context, and social context. Meaning has classified into 3 types; sender's meaning, utterance meaning, and sentence meaning. Second, the types of presupposition from 37 data of Joe Russo’s utterances there are 14 factive presupposition, 13 existential presupposition, 7 lexical presupposition, 4 structural presupposition, and 4 counterfactual presupposition. Among all types, only nonfactive type is not found in the data
