Abstract
The English for Specific Purpose is a teaching program that suits the content with the particular needs of specific groups of learners especially in Network Computer Engineering students because the English subject is important for their future who gets seeing English words in the computer program. The researcher is focusing on the students’ needs in their English language learning. This paper is written to achieve some objectives as follows: (1) To find out the learning materials needed by Computer Network Engineering students at Muhammadiyah 2 Vocational High School (2) To find out Computer Network Engineering students view ESP learning English at Muhammadiyah 2 Vocational High School. This research used qualitative approach. In its implementation it employs descriptive method. The data is collected by using questionnaire and interview in this study. The questionnaire and interview are used to know the needs of students’ computer network engineering major in learning English. This research shows the students’ needs in learning English. It shows that the students’ goal in learning English is to improve their vocabulary in terms of computer network. The students’ necessity is speaking skill, they tough speaking skill will help them to face in work field. The students also want speaking skill to master because it helps them in the future. The students of computer network engineering have difficulty in learning English, they lack in speaking skill, most them lack vocabulary and it makes them shy to speak in English. The students need more specific and varied English learning book because the books used by computer network engineering are not suitable for their field. The material from book is not related with the major, the material used for computer network engineering still in general term not in specific term. The students also want the teacher to teach them more clearly in giving the material and assignment. They need the teacher to explain about the material, give an example then give assignments. In addition, they need material that is easy to understand and useful for their future work. Referring to the result of the study, it can be concluded that most of students’ needs not fulfilled in learning English language. The researcher suggests that the students have learn English knowledge, and for the teacher should have assessment before teaching for making successfully in their needs.
