Abstract

Politeness is the expressions used to take care of individuals’ face in order to preserve good relationship. Strategies of positive and negative politeness tell how to speak properly when we talk to friends, older people, and teach how to praise, ask for help because of using good language will be more accepted by the other person. Therefore, researcher is interested and needs to conduct research about this topic with the following questions: 1.What strategies of positive and negative politeness are used in the movie? 2. Why do actors and actresses apply those positive and negative politeness strategies in the movie? the study uses method of qualitative descriptive approaches and the main theories used are from Brown and Levinson (1992) and Thomas (1980). The findings show that the positive strategy in Blackkklansman movie is noticing and attending to hearer (1 datum), exaggerating (5 data), intensifying (1 data), avoiding disagreement (6 data), presupposing / raising / asserting common ground (7 data), joking (1 data), asserting or presupposing speakers knowledge and concerning for hearers wants (2 data), including both speaker and hearer in the activity (1 data), giving or asking for reasons (2 data), assuming or asserting reciprocity (1 datum). Meanwhile, negative politeness strategy in the Blackkklansman movie including negative strategy politeness is being conventionally indirect (3 data), question and hedges (4 data), being pessimistic (6 data), minimizing the imposition (7 data), stating the FTA as a general rule (2 data). Moreover, the reasons for using these strategies are social distance (36 data), and power (15 data).From the findings of data analysis, the research results can be concluded that strategies of positive and negative politeness are dominated by strategy of positive politeness with 29 data in Blackkklansman movie. On the other hand the reasons for using the strategy are more dominated by social distance with 36 data because the characters are in human beings which are in essence have to be social, especially in the police with various characteristics, thoughts and social status as dealing with the community.
