Abstract

The fast proliferation of internet technology and information has harmed public discussion, as seen by the rise of fake news. Fake news occurs as a result of the internet's position as an online medium, which allows unverified information to spread rapidly. This study is aimed what are EFL students’ critical thinking skill in analyzing pandemic hoaxes and conspirational theories texts (interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and explanation)the pupils' achievement is seen by students' responses to a question about fake news. This research takes a qualitative approach and conducted a case study. It occurred in the English Education Department's fourth semester, 2021-2022. The participants in this study were nine pupils drawn from classes A through D, with the sample selected through deliberate sampling. The information was gathered through the use of tests and document analysis. The data from the students' tasks revealed that the high-achieving students were able to provide the cores of critical thinking, whereas the middle-achieving students were unable to present all of the cores of critical thinking. Furthermore, just part of those cores is presented to low-achieving pupils. Some of them are purely interpretive, analytical, and explanatory. To summarize, using fake news as credible information can help students improve their critical thinking skills.
