Abstract

In a conversation, we need to obey some rules so that the conversation runs cooperatively and will not produce an implied meaning that will confuse the listeners, especially in debate, that each candidate must adhere to the laws of the conversation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on this topic with research questions (1) What are the types of maxim violations committed by presidential candidates in the Final Presidential Debate Between Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden In 2020? (2) How does the violation of the maxims create the implicatures in the Final Presidential Debate Between Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden In 2020. This research used a qualitative research method and the data were analyzed by using the theory from Grice (1975) about cooperative principles and implicature. From data analysis, the findings showed that the types of maxim violation committed by Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden were the maxim of quantity (19 data), the maxim of manner (4 data), the maxim of relation (3 data), and the maxim of quality (1 datum). Besides, the implied meaning created by violation maxim was in the form of proudness, desires, promises, descriptions of experiences, and an action used to convey something indirectly. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that both Donald J. Trump and Joe Biden mostly violated the maxim of quantity because their statements or arguments were often too long, and they often explained a lot of things that did not need to explain and these violations ultimately resulted in another meaning or implicature.
