Abstract

This study examines the social criticism contained in the research movie Avatar (2009), where the focus of this research is how to analyze the message of social criticism in the film. In this study, the researcher pose two research questions. The first is about the types of social criticism that exist in films. The second is about the general picture of social criticism in the Avatar film. In this study, the researcher uses the theory of Renne Wellek and Austin Warren. Social criticism is a means of communication that functions as a control over the course of a social system and social process. Social criticism is actually more accurately called literature as a reflection of the society surrounding the time the work was written. This context shows that the sociology of literature needs to be firmly held by critics, because literature is a means of delivering social criticism, so there is literary criticism. With social criticism, people will always be aware of problems that must be resolved in society, namely the function of social criticism as control over the course of a social system and social process. In this study, researcher used qualitative methods. Based on the data analysis, it was concluded that the researcher obtained total 33 data on social criticism in avatar film conversation, and among the 33 data, the researcher concluded that in the avatar movie conversation there were various social criticisms. Social criticism about political problem (11 data), moral problem (11 data), education problem (7 data), economic problem (3 data), and cultural problem (1 data). And the researcher also obtained total 11 data on social criticism overview in avatar movie visual. Penelitian ini meneliti kritik sosial yang terdapat pada film avatar (2009), dimana fokus penelitian ini adalah bagaimana menganalisis pesan kritik sosial yang ada pada film. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis mengajukan dua pertanyaan penelitian. Pertama adalah tentang jenis – jenis kritik sosial yang ada pada film. Kedua adalah tentang gambaran umum kritik sosial yang ada pada film Avatar. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan teori dari Renne Wellek dan Austin Warren. Kritik sosial merupakan sarana komunikasi yang berfungsi sebagai kontro lterhadap jalannya suatu system sosial dan proses sosial. Kritik sosial sebenarnya lebih tepat disebut sastra sebagai cerminan masyarakat yang melingkupi waktu karya itu ditulis. Konteks ini menunjukkan bahwa sosiologi sastra perlu dipegang teguh oleh para kritikus, karena sastra merupakan sarana penyampaian kritik sosial, maka ada kritik sastra. Dengan adanya kritik sosial, masyarakat akan selalu sadar akan permasalahan yang harus segera diselesaikan di masyarakat, yaitu fungsi kritik sosial sebagai kontrol terhadap jalannya suatu system sosial dan proses sosial. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif. Berdasarkan analisis data, disimpulkan bahwa peneliti memperoleh total 33 data tentang kritik sosial dalam percakapan film avatar, dan di antara 33 data tersebut, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa dalam percakapan film avatar terdapat berbagai kritik sosial. Kritik sosial tentang masalah politik (11 data), masalah moral (11 data), masalah pendidikan (7 data), masalah ekonomi (3 data), dan masalah budaya (1 data). Dan peneliti juga memperoleh total 11 data tentang gambaran kritik sosial dalam visual film avatar.
