Abstract

Human beings should be able to use language properly by the function and social context. To reach successful communication, the speaker should obey the maxim of cooperative principles. The research attempts to study the maxims of Cooperative Principle that are flouted by the characters in the Bridesmaid movie and investigate why the characters in the Bridesmaid movie choose not to obey the maxims of the principle of cooperation in giving information to other characters. Therefore, this research used Bridesmaid movie character that consisted flouting maxim for the analysis with research question: 1) What maxims is flouted most by the main characters in the Bridesmaid movie? 2) What strategies are used by the main characters in the Bridesmaid movie to flout the maxim? The researcher uses two theories, the first one uses Grice’s theory as the main theory, and the second uses cutting theory as a supporting theory when analyzing data. This research uses a qualitative approach using document analysis to identify data. Sources of data gained from the conversations made by the characters. The data were collected by being identified, recorded, and stored in the data table. The flouting maxim conversation were transferred into the dataset were then analyzed, interpreted, and concluded. In this research, the researcher found that there were four flouting of maxims that had been done by the characters in the Bridesmaid movie. The results showed that in the Bridesmaid movie, the characters did not obey with the four principles of cooperation with 46 data: 20 data showed flouting of quality maxims, 15 data flouting of quantity maxim, 4 data flouting of relation maxim, and 7 data flouting of manner maxim. In addition, the characters in the Bridesmaid movie also used several strategies to flout the maxims, from 46 data: 19 data using overstatement strategies, 1 data using understatement, 5 data using irony, 4 data using tautology, 3 data using metaphor, 3 data using hyperbole, 4 data uses changing topic, 7 data uses ambiguous. The result of the analysis show that the characters in the Bridesmaid movie do flouting the maxims of the principle of cooperation for several reasons. The most common reason is to provide more understanding to other characters, avoid making the main character angry, convince listeners, and criticize someone’s actions.
