Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential aspect of English teaching and learning which contributes to students' ability to read and think. Since English reading comprehension uses a foreign language, some students find it challenging to comprehend the whole or parts of a text due to language barriers. The subject matter of this study is EFL students' reading complexities in the third semester. Moreover, this research aims to analyze the types of students' complexities in reading comprehension and the factors contributing to them. This research emphasizes the reading complexities in linguistic aspects caused by internal and external factors. Additionally, a qualitative method using a case study approach was employed in this study to flesh out the information related to reading complexities and the underlying issues. The applied data analysis came from Creswell (2012), exposing the qualitative method's analysis and interpretation. The participants were ten students with different reading characteristics from one English class. The data was obtained from questionnaires and online interviews to answer the research questions. The findings indicated that most participants struggle with reading fluency, word knowledge, grammar and syntax, morphology, and text structures. Moreover, regardless of the reading achievement, linguistic issues and learning environment were the most selected, affecting their reading complexities. It confirmed that the students had problems with language aspects in reading comprehension. Thus, this research attempts to give contributions to future research and college students with reading complexities that language barriers and other factors are not an obstacle to keep reading and developing comprehension skills. Furthermore, this study is expected to help the reading lecturers to indicate the types of reading complexities and assist the students with a good reading atmosphere.
