Abstract

ENGLISH : This study aims to discuss multiple personality disorder in the main character in the movie Fight Club. The film Fight Club itself tells of a man named Jack who has problems with himself and his life so he finds a way out by bringing out his second personality, this is called multiple personality disorder. Researcher have three objectives in this study; (1) To describe how multiple personality disorders of the main character are described in the film Fight Club, (2) To find out what the symptoms of multiple personality disorders of the main character are in the film Fight Club, and (3) To describe how the main character handles his multiple personality disorders in the film Fight Club. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method for this research because this method is suitable for explaining the problems that exist in literary works through descriptive words, and also the psychological theory approach from Rene Wellek and Warren (1990) to be able to examine the psychological aspects that appear in literary works, which in this study will discuss psychological aspects that appear in narrative elements such as characters. Especially the topic in this study is very closely related to psychological aspects. To help understand matters related to multiple personality disorders, researcher use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders from the American Psychiatric Association (2013). The research data itself were collected from films and film scripts. This research conclude that Jack as the main character has multiple personality disorders which he imagines as another character named Tyler. Tyler as the second personality has a personality that is very much different from Jack as the main personality. This is because Tyler was created based on a reference to Jack's problems, and his appearance is Jack's way of improving his life through his unconsciousness. As a sufferer of multiple personality disorders, Jack also has symptoms of this disorder, such as amnesia, depersonalization, derealization, identity alteration, and identity confusion. In the end, his second personality, named Tyler, actually became a new problem for Jack, which required him to immediately take back control of his consciousness, which was slowly being taken over by a second, more dominant personality.
