Abstract

This undergraduate thesis discusses transmedial narration in The Kite Runner’s novel into film in the form of flashbacks, physical appearances, and sexual abuse. The objects of this research were The Kite Runner novel and film. The researcher formulated two questions in this research. The first was about the transmedial narration in The Kite Runner’s novel as film. The second was the portrayal of transmedial narration in the form of flashbacks, physical appearance, and sexual abuse. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this study, and the theories were from Ellestrom (2010) about transmedial narration and supported by Damono (2012) about the transformation process in literary works, especially from novel to film. The findings from the data analysis showed that there is transmedial narration in The Kite Runner novel when it comes to film. Furthermore, through flashback, physical appearance, and sexual abuse, transmedial narration modifies and diminishes events and existents in the novel and film. The researcher also found in the flashback events, cutting down on the number of characters in an adaptation can alter the plot and themes of the work. In the form of physical appearance, the film version differs from the novel by focusing more on the abstract existents of some characters rather than focusing on concrete existents. Additionally, the film medium struggles to show what the characters are thinking and feeling, especially in the portrayal of sexual abuse. Not to mention, in the film medium, there is a special censorship agency that will provide limitations in matters such as these scenes. Thus, the transmedial narration in The Kite Runner's novel can be attributed to this.
