Abstract

A product of brand usually uses naming for the name of their product to classify, distinguish, or mark. Some of the product naming is used for giving people information of that product. A name is a word or term used for identification. Color name commonly is used for distinguishing a color which has close kind color. Hence, it must have different name in order to not get accidently exchanged when we identify those colors. The study of compound words is one of interesting thing in linguistic field, because there are some compound words that appeared new words especially in the product of brands. Accordance with the case above, the researcher proposed two research questions. There are: 1) What are the structures of word formation of compound words used in the color name of Dulux’s wall paint colors; and 2) What types of compound meaning are found in the compound words of the color name of Dulux’s wall paint colors. In this research, the researcher used McCarthy’s (2002) theory of word formation, Plag’s (2002) theory of compound meaning, McManis’s theory (1987), McArthur’s theory (1998), and also other theories to analyze the data and find the meaning of such compound words. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method in this research. The method contains identification, classification, and description of the data. The data were used in this research is the compound words in The Color Name of Dulux’s Wall Paint Colors. The researcher then analyzed and interpreted the collected data. The results showed that there are 51 data of The Color Name of Dulux’s Wall Paint Colors available in the product, six categories of word formations were found, i.e. adjective + noun are 11 data, adjective + adjective are 9 data, noun + verb are 2 data, noun + noun are 15 data, noun + adjective are 13 data, and adverb + adjective are 1 data. The researcher also found types of compound meaning of compound words consisting of endocentric compound 43 data and 8 other data are included in exocentric compound. Based on the findings above, the researcher concluded that the structures of word formation were dominated by noun + noun (15 data), and types of compound meaning most dominated by endocentric compound (43 data).
