Abstract

This study discusses the imagination of Anne Shirley, the main character in Lucy Maud Monthgomery's Novel Anne of Green Gables (1908). The aim of this research is; (1) to understand Anne Shirley's character as a reflection of her imagination (2) To find out some of the literary devices that build imagination in the novel Anne of Green Gables (3) To understand the development of Anne Shirley's character and also examine the factors that cause this development. The researcher used the New Criticism theory to analyze the character of Anne Shirley and in analyzing the imagination of the character Anne Shirley the researcher used the Physcoanalysis by Sigmund Freud approach. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, which is used to analyze and explore the imagination and character of the main character in more depth to find the answer. The results of this study show the character of Anne Shirley with her physical appearance depicted in the novel, which is like wearing a faded brown sailor hat, and under the hat, on her back, there are two braids of very thick red hair. Her face was small, white, thin, and freckled; his mouth is large and so are his eyes which appear green in some lights and moods and gray in others. Furthermore, Anne uses her imagination as a self-defense mechanism. Defense mechanisms function to keep Anne Shirley safe from dangerous situations. The defense system is used subconsciously. Anne Shirley uses this protective strategy by projecting her emotions onto other objects (animated or inanimate objects), for example by screaming or being silent to calm her emotions. In Anne Shirley's situation, her imagination was what helped her relax. And finally, Anne Shirley's character develops from a girl without love to an adult teenager. The development of his character is caused by two factors, namely internal factors which are his own motivation and external factors which come from the people around him and his new environment.
