Abstract

Social discrimination is a type of portrayal in which social behavior is directed at or towards a person or group based on an assessment of their social characteristics. This related to the definition of social discrimination as told by Bhugra (2016). This study aims to describe social discrimination in two different novels, American novels and Indonesian novels. The first is R.J. Palacio’s novel Wonder, and the second is Agnes Davonar’s novel Ayah, Mengapa Aku Berbeda?. This research also raises a comparative literature study with aims to compare the social discrimination in terms of the impact of social discrimination in both novels and the form of social discrimination itself. The method used in this research is qualitative research, the researcher gathered the data through words or sentences, qualitative data is concerned with descriptions that can be observed but not measured, and the researcher also uses structuralism approach to examine the research questions. The findings of this study demonstrated to the reader the impact of social discrimination in both novels as well as a comparison of the form of social discrimination in each literary works.
