Abstract

This research aims to contribute the exploration of self-reliance by analyzing the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s songs. This objective is to categorize the data base on different characteristics of self-reliance and how woman’s self-reliance is depicted in Taylor Swift’s songs’ lyrics. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing the data obtained from examining the lyrics and closely listening to the song, using discourse analysis theory by Fairclough and Flick. The lyrics were focused in ten selected songs’ lyrics from numerous album; “Shake It Off”, “The Man”, “You Need to Calm Down”, “ME!”, “Bejeweled”, “Karma”, “You’re on Your Own, Kid”, “I Did Something Bad”, “Look What You Made Me Do”, and “Mean”. The data was classified according to Ralph Waldo Emerson’s concept self-reliance and the various type of figurative language identified by Kennedy and Perrine. The findings of the study revealed three different characteristics of self-reliance: trust in oneself, nonconformity and independent thinking. Trust in oneself was the most dominant characteristics, with sixteen instances found across all examined songs, followed by thirteen instances of independent thinking and eight instances of nonconformity. Furthermore, the study identified that Taylor Swift expresses the depiction of woman’s self-reliance through figurative language and simple sentences. Swift employs eight types of figurative language, including simile, metaphor, hyperbole, synecdoche, paradox, symbol, repetition, and idiom. Metaphor was the most frequently used, followed by symbol, repetition, and the other types of figurative language. The objective of the study is to contribute to the current discourse on the important of self-reliance, particularly for women in modern society, by examining the self-reliance characteristics and depiction of woman’s self-reliance in Taylor Swift’s songs’ lyrics. Additionally, the results of this study may have implications for the role of music, art, and literary works in promoting the depiction of women's self-reliance.
