Abstract

Accident is a fiction novel written for masses that tell about a mother or wife as the main character, her name is Page Clarke has struggle with her cheating husband, her struggle with her mother & sister who are always in a state of denial and her struggle with her son who assumes that she is the reason for the rift between her parents, her struggle with the fact that her lovely daughter might not actually see another day. This encumbrance reflects anxiety and combines with good defense mechanism. Due to this, the researcher then proposed two problems: 1) what makes the main character anxious ? 2) how does the main character apply the defense mechanism to cope with her anxiety?. In other to make the elaboration, arguable, reasonable, and justifiable, The theories of psychology were taken from Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis. Qualitative descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the anxiety and defense mechanism. The data was collected by diction any words, sentence, and paragraph that indicates it. The result of this research showed that Page Clarke as the main character experiences anxiety. She used two types of anxiety; there are neurotic and moral anxieties. Firstly her neurotic anxiety come after the accident of her daughter can be identified from his bad thought and panic reaction. Secondly the main character neurotic anxiety comes from her dispersed marriage her neurotic can be seen from her needs that cannot be fulfilled. The last Page’s moral anxiety occurs when the ego is threatened by punishment from the superego. Page’s moral anxiety can also be seen from the guilty feelings to her son caused her conflict with her husband.
