Abstract

Language is a communication tool that unites people worldwide. People communicate using the appropriate language usage of each country. It plays an important role in transmitting message to humans. They use it to express themselves, to communicate with each other, and even to change their minds. Speech act is a term used in linguistics to describe statements that have a social or physiological effect on the listener. One type of speech act is the “representative speech act”, which involves statement used to express beliefs, knowledge, or views about something. Representatives is a kind of illocutionary act that underlines those kinds of speech acts that state what the speaker believes to be the case or not. As the writer said that the writer elaborates and analyse the text of the speech with the speech act theory. Starting with analysing what kinds of representatives as one of speech act classification, use in that Jay Shetty podcast video with Mel Robbins. Actually, the researcher found 26 utterances of statement of fact, 18 utterances of conveying opinion, 14 utterances of assertion, and 6 utterances of conclusion. From the data found, the researcher takes 5 data in every kind of representative’s speech act that is enough to represent the whole data of each. Explanation using representative speech act pragmatic theory, it can be concluded that there are facts, opinions, assertions and conclusions in every sentence spoken by the questioner and what is asked in the video podcast. Then, based on this theory, the representation in the form of a sentence in the conversation between Jay and Mell must be better understood according to the context in which the facts, opinions, assertions and conclusions appear misunderstanding of interpretation does not occur.
