Abstract

Interview in this research are one of object that can be used as material for linguistic research. Interviews can be conducted by two or more people directly or indirectly, there are also interviews that are conducted directly and then displayed on online media such as YouTube. There are several linguistic theories that apply to several types of communication which as pragmatics. Pragmatics is often found in several types of communication, such as speeches, interviews, or even daily conversations. This research aims to determine the types of deixis and what references deixis are used in the interview video “The Tonight Show Starring with Jimmy Fallon with Stranger Things’ cast”. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research where the data obtained are presented in written form. The main theory used in this research is deixis, which is one part of pragmatics. The researcher analyzes the data by using deixis theory according to Stephen C. Levinson and George Yule. The importance of learning deixis is to be able to understand the meaning of utterances. In interviews there are usually many misunderstandings between the speakers and the listeners. The interpretation of all these deictic expressions depends on the background context used in the communication process, such as; who is the speaker, at the time or place of speaking, the speaker's gestures, the current location in the discourse, and the topic of the discourse. The results of this research show there are 110 data. 98 data that are included in the type of deixis and also the 12 data that are included in reference deixis. 75 data on personal deixis, 5 data on temporal deixis, 6 data on spatial deixis, 10 data on discourse deixis, and 2 data on social deixis. The researcher also found 12 data that contained the references of deixis. 8 data on the anaphora reference, and 4 data on the cataphora reference. The conclusion, there are 5 types of deixis, and 2 types of references of deixis.
