Abstract

Non-observance of maxim is a phenomenon where a speaker breaks the cooperative principles. The aim of the research is to find the occurrence of non-observance of maxims, and analyzing the purpose of non-observance of maxims in Netflix serial TV show Criminal:UK. The researcher uses Thomas’ theory of five type of non-observance of maxims to find instances where maxims are failed to be observed. The research employs descriptive-qualitative method and uses pragmatic approach. The data from this study is in the form of utterances spoken by any characters in interview session. The source of data for this research were the whole show of Criminal:UK. and its script, which were made from subtitles. The show was consisted of two seasons; three episodes on season one and four episodes on season two. After watching a total of seven episodes, the researcher found 201 data. The result of the analysis showed that there are 37 instances of flouting a maxim, 114 instances of violating a maxim, 2 instances of infringing a maxim, 43 instances of opting out a maxim, and 5 instances of suspending a maxim. The most occurring non-observance of maxim in the interview session of the show is violating maxim of quality. It means that the interviewers, and mostly the interviewees, chose to speak untruthfully. The researcher found six purposes as to why the character in the show breaks maxim of quality, five purposes to break maxim of quantity, four purposes to break maxim of relevance, and five purposes to break maxim of manner. The most occurring purpose of non-observance of maxim is to withhold or refuse providing information. It means that the speakers failed to obey a maxim with the intention of not divulging information, or to show that they are unwilling to cooperate.
