Abstract
The nature of directive speech acts is to get someone to do something. The listener performs specific actions based on the utterance spoken by the speaker. This research raised the topic of directive speech acts that existed in a novel. This research used the novel entitled The Song of Achilles (2012) by Madeline Miller as the object. This research objectives were to identify the directive speech acts taken from written dialogue in a novel to analyze the types of directive speech acts and their social functions. The theories used to analyze the data in this research were the theory of directive speech acts by Searle (1979), the theory of types of directive speech acts by Bach (1979), and the theory of social functions by Leech (1983). This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This research found 293 data based on the type of directive speech acts, including requestives (37 data), questions (93 data), requirements (90 data), prohibitives (33 data), permissives (19 data), and advisories (21 data). Furthermore, 293 data on social function were found, including competitive (235 data), convivial (36 data), collaborative (14 data), and conflictive (8 data). In conclusion, the most common types are questions and requirements because the novel is set in the past, the desired information can only be obtained by asking others, and characters with authority make them command others as they wish. The function that is mostly used is competitive because in speaking their utterances, the characters want to be the ones who get benefits such as asking, commanding, and requesting.
