Abstract
This research examined the teacher and students' perception of using Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom. Furthermore, the interference of Bahasa Indonesia with students’ speaking skills was also investigated. Specifically, this research aimed to achieve three objectives: 1) To find out the teacher and students' perception regarding the use of Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom; 2) To find out the situations require teacher and students to use Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom; 3) to investigate the interference of Bahasa Indonesia with the students' speaking skills in pronunciation and grammatical aspects. This research adopted qualitative research with a case study approach to investigate the perception of the teacher and students regarding the use of Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom. Besides, this research also tried to find out the interference of Bahasa Indonesia with students’ speaking skills in pronunciation and grammatical aspects. Questionnaires and interviews were employed to find out the perception of the teacher and students regarding the use of Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom. Furthermore, observation was employed to analyze the students' speaking performance to find the interference of Bahasa Indonesia in pronunciation and grammatical aspects. This research was conducted at SMK Plus Miftahul Ihsan, Lebak, Banten. The current research showed that the teacher and students positively view using Bahasa Indonesia in the classroom. They perceived the use of Bahasa Indonesia as a technique that helps them overcome difficulties in the teaching and learning process. Explaining new vocabulary, clarifying grammar rules, and maintaining conducive classroom condition are some situations that often require the teacher and students to use Bahasa Indonesia. Meanwhile, most students use Bahasa Indonesia to confirm understanding; it includes asking questions and clarifying their understanding. In other words, they use Bahasa Indonesia when they do not know how to express it in English. This research also showed that Bahasa Indonesia interferes in how students pronounce words and construct sentences. The students made errors caused by differences in the sound systems of Bahasa Indonesia and English, also differences in grammatical rules between Bahasa Indonesia and English.
