Abstract
Many literary works are written by using symbol. It makes the reader think what that means and what the writer wants to say with those symbols. Symbol is something that is interesting to analyze because we will know the meaning behind the symbol and it make us interpret what the symbol wants to tell. In our surrounding, we might see so many symbols to find what their meanings are. In literature, there are sometime symbols, which create curiosity that will make them interesting. In this research, the writer wants to focus on the symbols used in Gerard Manley Hopkins’s poems The research entitled “) Religious Symbols on Gerard Manley Hopkins’ Poems.” This research presents the aim to find out the religious symbols used in Gerard Manley Hopkins poems as well as the meaning of the religious symbols used the poems, this topic with research questions: 1) What are the religious symbols used in Gerard Manley Hopkins poems? 2) What are the meanings of religious symbols used in Gerard Manley Hopkins poems? This research is qualitative research which uses descriptive method. The descriptive research involves a collection of techniques used to specify, delineate, or describe naturally occurring phenomenon without experimental manipulation.Based on the research findings, the results showed that the analyzed paper reveals the religious Symbols in the ten poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, those ten poems are entitled “Spring,” “The Caged Skylark,” “The Lantern out of Doors,” “The times are nightfall,” “Peace,” “Ribblesdale,” “In the Valley of the Elwy,” “Inversnaid,” “Moonrise,” and “The Candle Indoors.” From those ten poems, those indicates that the poems has to do with something religious themselves. The religious things like something is relatable with biblical, heaven, hell, life and death, and even Jesus Himself. Those poems give their own meaning to be interpreted bythe readers Based on the research above, it can be concluded that Gerard Manley Hopkins expresses his pride through several characteristics of poetic expression in his eight poems those are first, the use of dictions which are clear, easy to be understood, and closely related to religious symbols, such as: spring, skylark, Christ, nightfall. Second, The use of repetitions enhances the several messages of the poems. Third, the use of symbols as the figurative language, which is clear, contains the meaning related to the blacks’ life.
