Abstract

Vocabulary is an influential fundamental part of learning English as a language. However, non-native students frequently need help in acquiring English vocabulary. Several issues are causing difficulties, such as inadequate learning media employment, which declines students' motivation. Therefore, this study attempts to examine Quizlet in improving students' vocabulary mastery and explore students' experiences in using Quizlet. This study employed explanatory mixed methods research, including quantitative and qualitative approaches. One pretest-posttest group was used to collect quantitative data, and questionnaires were exploited to obtain qualitative data. Thirty-seven eighth-grader students at SMPN 46 Bandung participated in this research. The participants were selected by using a random sampling technique. Data collection was computed using SPSS version 27.0, which examined the normality, Wilcoxon signed rank, and N-gain scores. As a result, this research presented students' scores and experiences of data analysis. This research found a significant improvement in students' English vocabulary. Before receiving treatments, the mean score on the pre-test was 29,47, while the mean score on the post-test was 89,19 after some treatments. The result of the post-test presents a higher mean score compared to the previous score before using Quizlet in acquiring vocabulary. Moreover, the value of the Wilcoxon signed rank was less than 0,001 (<0,005), which indicates a high level of improvement. This means the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The N-gain score was also indicated as a high level in the interpretation 0,8 (0.30-0.70). Data analysis shows a significant development in students' English vocabulary mastery, and students have a fascinating experience when using Quizlet to acquire vocabulary. This study suggests that Quizlet should be exploited in vocabulary acquisition to assist students in learning English.
