Abstract

In learning English, vocabulary is a stumbling block for language learners in learning English, especially in sequential translation practice. Many English language learners find it difficult to learn vocabulary. In the context of consecutive interpreting, vocabulary is important to master. Through note-taking strategies, this study aims to analyse students' vocabulary development in consecutive interpreting practice. Qualitative method was used to conduct this research. This research adopts a qualitative method because Creswell (2016) states that qualitative research explores the meaning or interpretation of a situation or social problem from the perspective of the individuals involved in it. Using narrative inquiry, this study adopts the perceptions from the interviews of five sixth-semester students majoring in English education at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung who have attended interpreting classes. The results of this study show that the students experienced some challenges in consecutive intereting, then they overcame the challenges with strategies that they thought of themselves. In addition, the participants agreed on the importance and necessity of vocabulary skills in consecutive interpreting practice. This study showed that most of the participants had a favourable perception of how note-taking can help vocabulary development in consecutive interpreting. In particular, the study suggested that students should often practice consecutive interpreting by using note-taking strategies. This will not only develop vocabulary skills, but also improve focus and result in good interpretation.
