Abstract

Femininity and masculinity has a close connection to the norms, values, and social demands formed in the culture in which an individual is raised and lives. Literature, as a reflection of culture, plays an important role in describing and examining the dynamics of femininity and masculinity through its characters. The purpose of this research is to analyze the portrayal of femininity and masculinity through the main character in Five Feet Apart novel and film, which is Stella Grant. Researcher analyzed the portrayal of femininity and masculinity through Stella Grant’s characterization and point of view. The theory used for reference in this research are Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) by Sandra Bem, Abrams’ theory of characterization which was developed by Minderop, Abrams’ narrative point of view, Petrie and Boggs’ cinematic point of view theory, Alicia Rasley’s levels of point of view theory, and Genette’s narratology theory. The method used in this research is comparative literature. As a result of this research, based on the feminine items and masculine items categorized by Sandra Bem, Stella Grant has seven feminine traits and seven masculine traits. Stella Grant’s feminine traits include affectionate, eager to soothe hurt feelings, feminine, loves children, shy, warm, and yielding. In addition, Stella Grant’s masculine traits include act as a leader, aggressive, analytical, assertive, dominant, and self-reliant. The discovery of the masculine side of Stella Grant shows that feminine and masculine traits are not restricted to someone’s sexuality. Women can have masculine traits, and also men can have feminine traits. In conclusion, these traits are more related to an individual’s personality and character than to their sexuality.
